My E-litter was born on the 31^st of Dec. 1992. I was determined to keep one female puppy for further progeny. On New Year’s I knew which to pick out of a sizable litter of 12 healthy puppies, eight females among them. I recognized her—Easy—from the start, not knowing exactly on what I based my judgment and why she particularly stood out among the new family. Her lively temper, her extraordinarily beautiful short body, and her self-reliance didn’t escape me. It was this particular litter that helped vom Schwarzen Ulan get its wonderful reputation.

Three females from this litter couldn’t have been more successful: Early vom Schwarzen Ulan, Ch. Eve vom Schwarzen Ulan and Easy vom Schwarzen Ulan. Early was given to a kennel kept by friends and had offspring from various dogs to keep up the lineage. Both Easy and Eve were to remain in the Kennel vom Schwarzen Ulan for progeny. Eve was given to Mr. Petraccia with the option of using her for further breeding. Out of the three dogs, Eve became the most successful. She represents an outstanding exception in the Groenendael lineage.

Easy, a hopeful highlight stayed with her mother Ariane and me. She became an exceptionally beautiful bitch, who reminded me of Lasco, her father. My daily observations with this animal confirmed me of her strong, independent character. It took a lot of sensitivity to lead this impulsive dog according to my expectations. She had a marked drive for shepherding, a knack for solving problems and relied strongly on her own self.

In short, she was a clever witch. But she could be very stubborn and irascible and would attempt to get her way with the rest of the pack.

4 month

Compared to her sister Eve, she didn’t go much on public shows. Yet she managed over the years to meet the strict requirements set by highly renowned judges from abroad. With the exception of one show, she always placed under the four best.

The only bitch from German breeders to consistently outrank her was her sister, Eve. And so for Eve’s sake, I didn’t take Easy along so often, not wanting the two sisters to compete against each other.

In between these shows mentioned above, Easy bore a litter on the 2^nd of Dec. 1995 and again on the 6^th of Aug. 1997 of 9 puppies each and brought them up. Out of these 18 offspring, 14 were X-rayed for DH and they are all HD exempt A or B.

With Easy the branch from the E-litter left the Kennel vom Schwarzen Ulan. I have no daughter from her. There is however another kennel that engages in breeding activities with a daughter from the second litter. It is Nice vom Schwarzen Ulan, a matriarch in the Kennel vom Ziegelhau. Nice has passed the SchH1. Her first litter was quite promising.


Those are the last pictures of Easy, taken in my garden about four months before her decease on the 2^nd of Sept. 2002. I had to relieve her of her suffering. She fell into a final sleep in my arms on that day about 11 o’clock. The group vom Schwarzen Ulan lost on this day another important and influential breed dog.
