Hella vom Nauenhof Lord du Clos Hurlant & Arlette vom Nauenhof |
Hella
joined us in July 1984 at fourteen weeks of age. She was a so-called second-hand dog. Since her first owner had problems with her, he did the only
proper thing and brought her back to her breeder, Birgit Koenen, before
ruining her altogether. Originally,
I was supposed to get a puppy from a later litter, as both litters in the
Kennel vom Nauenhof had been sold at that time.
And so now Hella (Thora) came to us in a roundabout way. Hella on age 3 month |

I can now admit that this dog was a young devil. Her unruly behaviour drove my parents to despair. Curious and clever on the one side and a strong temperament on the other. Our relationship—Thora and me—was unique, probably because she was my dog. Maybe I wasn’t strict enough with my training habits and let her get away with a lot. |

At age one, Thora passed the test of a companion dog, which was followed later on by an endurance test and various championships, those in the divisions of SchH-subordination and Schutzhund. Thora wasn’t able to track, or better said, I lacked the ambitions of excelling in that area. After Thora had filled the requirements demanded of a breeder and had passed the temperament test and X-ray test, she delivered her first litter in March 1989. She relied strongly on her instinct. Mating, deliveries and rearing her puppies were no problem for her. In a total of two litters she delivered 14 puppies, of which 2 daughters were raised for breeding purposes. Thora was never known to have been sick until ten weeks before her passing away. |

Her
sudden death was an unspeakable loss for me, because I couldn’t imagine her
dying at this age. She was fit and lively up until then and enjoyed her walks.
I hadn’t thought at that point that our time together was limited to
such a short span of time. She suffered from complications due to a tumour and I was
forced to make a decision.

She dozed into her last sleep in my arms at the age of ten years and eight months. |
